Delphi Road Show Sept 1!

OCDUG will be part of the Delphi Road Show this year. They will be in town on Wed, Sept 1, 2010 to give us the low down on everything delphi. As you all know, these are well attended events so please plan to be early. For this event, we will be holding the meeting in Laguna Hills at the Laguna Hills Community Center. There will be pizza for all and there is usually a raffle but I don't have confirmation on that at this time. So get out early, bring your appetite and your Delphi questions.

On a side note, there will NOT be a regular meeting in August. The meeting on Sept 1 is our next meeting. And remember, this is a Wednesday (this event only). The meeting starts at 7:00 and will last about 2 hours.

New meeting location!

As of next week, we are going to have a new meeting location and a new meeting day. We will be meeting on the 4th Tuesday of the month from now on. And as most of you know, Michael Cummings moved to Texas so we no longer can meet at the place formerly known as Brick Software. For the time being, we will be meeting at GDR Group, Inc in Irvine. The address is 5520 Trabuco Rd, Irvine 92620. Once I get a good map and directions I will update the website with this information.

Next week we will have Steve Kramer as our speaker, the topic is still unclear. Again, once I get more information I will let everyone know.

Thanks,
Jim

**** Update, the LewLocation has been update do include the map for the new meeting location.

No meeting in June.

We still do not have a new meeting location yet so there will be no meeting in June.

Sit back, turn on the air conditioner and think of a new place for us to meet. Send your suggestions to me or Steve.

Thanks, Jim

Next meeting 4/28/2010

This month Jim Ferguson will be in talking more on Generics in Delphi 2010 and some other cool things that you can now do with the language enhancements. Bring your toughest Delphi 2010 questions and see if Jim can answer them.

Meeting starts at 7pm and lasts 2 hours. See ya there!

"Double Header" on 3/25/09

In honor of the beginning of baseball season, this upcoming meeting will be a double header. Greg Stevenson will be discussing two different topics.

Internationalizing your application

Greg will discuss an easy and systematic way to prepare your application so that it can easily support any language or locale. The approach uses standard, open source tools and code that have minimal impact on your existing applications. This will also work with most existing versions of Delphi, including Delphi 2009.

Logging on Steroids

Logging to text files has been a core debugging practice from the early days of programming. It is often the only practical way to determine the root cause of things like interment issues that occur on a single customer’s system. Logging should be a key component of every developer’s tool kit and embedded in every application. Logging has also grown well beyond its text file roots into a very powerful diagnostic tool. The talk will discuss various approaches to logging from a DYI logger using TStringList, to open source loggers like Log4D, to commercial loggers like CodeSite and SmartInspect. The pros and cons of each will be discussed so you can determine what is the best logging tool for your purposes and how best to apply it. A free copy of SmartInspect (www.gurock.com) will also be raffled off and a 25% discount code provided to all attendees.

Pizza will most likely be served (hows that for non-committal) so get there early to get a good seat and a good slice.

Getting Things Done with Greg Stevenson on Feb 25, 09

Greg Stevenson says: This will be a free class on GTD in a regular meeting room. It is a combined meeting with the OC Delphi User Group, which has been kind enough to let me take over one of their meetings to make the presentation.

I will be the presenter and am not a GTD expert, DavidCo consultant, etc. However, I think I have a good enough handle on the concepts and my own system to put together a good basic presentation.

Class will be just two hours so this will obviously not be as thorough or in depth as the full day DavidCo seminars. However, I'm hoping it will be sufficient to:

-Introduce people who never heard of GTD to it. -Give a frame of reference that will make sense when people read/re-read the GTD book. -Tips and tricks to ease into GTD. -Show people how to create their own custom GTD system using mine as an example.

Some special areas of emphasis include: -Handling the piles of "Stuff" on your desk and elsewhere -Getting your email in-boxes to zero and keeping them there. -The practical approach to project planning -Tips to make sure your doing the right thing at the right time.

Space will be limited to about 30 people so RSVP early. I'm giving the members of OC-GTD, OCDUG, and Brick Software (who hosts the meeting place) the opportunity to RSVP first. Then after Feb. 4th I will open it up to others. Prior to Feb 4th, send me an email if you would like to bring one or more guests and I'll put them on a list (first come first serve) for the remaining spots be for promoting it to other groups.

If this presentation seems successful, I may try to do another one with a bigger venue later.

Pizza will most likely be served (hows that for non-committal) so get there early to get a good seat and a good slice.

May Meeting on 5/28/08 - Linux and Linux Distros for the Uninitiated

This month Larry Lichtmann Will be our presenter.

The open-source Linux operating system has been a significant presence in the server world for some time, and, though still a sliver on the client systems market share pie chart, it is increasingly seen as a viable alternative to Windows for personal computer users. This talk is a basic introduction for the technically savvy but still virgin on the workings of the Linux operating system. The distinction between “Linux” and a “Linux Distro” will illuminated, and a survey of the most important distros will be presented.

Remember, the meetings are now on WEDNESDAY! The meetings start at 7 and last for about 2 hours. There is a map to the meeting location under the New Location menu item to the left.

Virtual Explosion: A Survey of Virtualization Software for Real Developers

This months meeting will be on April 23th and will be presented by Larry Lichtmann & Robert Baker

A previous talk by one of us (LL) introduced OCDUG to the value of OS virtualization (in its incarnation as VMWare) for the working software developer. Some years have passed, "virtualization" now ranks somewhere just below "Web 2.0" and "AJAX" as an industry buzzword, and virtualization options have multiplied faster than rabbits on Cialis®. This talk will review the choices now available, including the spectrum of offerings from consensus segment leader VMWare; those from the industry's 500-lb parakeet, Microsoft, real and vapor; as well as a selection of open-source applications, of both the "immaculate conception" and "first hit free" varieties. No liquor will be served, but programs will be demonstrated.

Don't miss this one, everyone can benefit from virtualization.

The meeting will be at 7pm and as always will last about 2 hours. Rumor has it pizza will be served so arrive early for the best seats and the hottest pizza.

 Delphi-specific Virus W32Induc-A reported.

useless_idiot writes "According to Sophos

http://www.sophos.com/blogs/sophoslabs/?p=6117

a virus has been identified in the wild which is Delphi-specific.

When it becomes active, it checks the machine for a Delphi installation, and if it finds one, it modifies sysconst.pas (saving the original as sysconst.bak) and compiling sysconst.dcu.

It then infects every executable compiled on the system. The infected executables apparently have properties which make them undesirable on anyone's machine, even non-developers. A number of Delphi-based Trojans have been found in the wild that are infected, so even the black-hats are vulnerable.

Take a minute, and have a peek at sysconst.pas on the systems you are responsible for."
